OFT 'not overly concerned with car rental'
The Office of Fair Trading's investigation into consumer contracts
has concluded that there are no major issues to be addressed by the
car rental industry. It said: "Car rental as a rule does not hide
nasty surprises in the small print of contracts."
The OFT did raise some concerns over the limited customer
understanding of credit card pre-authorisation and lack of
information to explain contractual waivers cover. It recommended
that rental companies provide terms and conditions on their website
and summarise key terms such as waiver restrictions and
exclusions.
"I am pleased that the BVRLA has been able to contribute positively
to this independent review, which confirms that there were no major
failings to justify OFT action against the UK car rental sector,"
said John Lewis, chief executive of the BVRLA. "However, it is
vital that the industry continues to raise the bar and deliver a
first-class customer service. We have already produced
customer-friendly information to ensure renting a car is easy to
understand."
